The Climate Impacts Group is dedicated to building the resilience of communities and ecosystems across the Northwest to the impacts of climate variability and climate change. Since 1995, the Climate Impacts Group has produced exceptional research products and developed strong relationships among resource managers, planners, and policy makers in the region.
EarthLab is a new initiative at the University of Washington seeking to link and apply the amazing environmental research happening at the UW with decision makers working on solutions to environmental challenges. Stewarded by the College of the Environment, EarthLab supports application-focused interdisciplinary collaboration across and beyond the University of Washington. EarthLab focuses on addressing our world’s most pressing environmental challenges – catalyzing collaborations with partners across the private, public, and non-profit sectors. The Climate Impacts Group and EarthLab are seeking a Full-Time, Temporary Marketing and Communications Specialist to support our efforts in implementing proactive, organization-wide communication strategies focused on catalyzing action towards climate resilience and EarthLab awareness raising more broadly.
The Marketing and Communications Specialist will support CIG’s Lead Scientist for Science Communication and EarthLab’s Communication and Engagement Lead in the execution of the CIG and EarthLab communications strategies and help to increase our engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders. This position will also help to inform new, creative directions for communications product development with the aim of helping increase the reach and impact of the Climate Impacts Group’s regional research and engagement efforts as well as supporting a number of initiatives for EarthLab and its other member organizations.
We are looking for an individual with a wide range of skills and interests; someone who can comfortably wear many hats in an organization and who will welcome new challenges that present opportunities to develop new proficiencies. Specific duties for the Marketing and Communications Specialist include:
• Assist the Lead Scientist for Science Communication and the EarthLab Communications and Engagement Lead with the implementation of the strategic communication plans, engagement tracking and evaluation efforts, and support internal communication workflow; (30%)
• Lead website maintenance and updating; help with tracking and interpreting website analytics; (20%)
• Support development, roll-out and distribution of communications products (e.g., written materials, visualizations, infographics, multimedia); (10%)
• Assist with organization of communication events (e.g., seminars, webinars, workshops) and coordination among UW, College, EarthLab, CIG staff, participants and attendees; (10%)
• Help maintain media engagement and social media calendars and tracking systems; (10%)
• Assist with listserv management and email marketing (5%)
• Routinely post information for stakeholders using email distribution lists, newsletters, and social media tools; (5%)
• Provide editorial, graphic and layout support for materials intended for publication or public presentation, recommending revisions, format changes, alternative methods of presentation, or refinements as necessary; (10%)
The Marketing and Communications Specialist will report to the Climate Impacts Group’s Lead Scientist for Science Communication. Reflecting our team approach, the position will also be advised and/or directed by other senior staff in CIG and the EarthLab Executive Director, as needed for specific projects.
• Bachelor’s degree in a communication-related discipline (e.g., communications, journalism, policy) OR in an Earth science field (e.g., geology, atmospheric science, oceanography)
• 2 or more years of professional experience
• Proven experience in developing and creating targeted communications materials (e.g. graphics, documents, reports, presentations) that translate technical or scientific information for a range of audiences from experts to the general public
• Familiarity with content management systems, including WordPress and other technical aspects of maintaining online material, and MS Office Suite and presentation software; knowledge of print, electronic, and multimedia publishing tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite)
• Experience in aspects of report production (e.g., copy editing, design, layout)
• Excellent writing and editorial skills
• Excellent oral communication skills
• Strong organizational skills, attention to consistency and detail and insistence on scientific and technical accuracy
• Exceptional team player with strong interpersonal skills, and equal ability to
to work independently under minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of an effective team
• Demonstrated initiative, proactive nature, and ability to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing and fast-paced environment
• Master’s degree in a communications-related discipline or an Earth science field with demonstrated science communication experience (e.g., geology, atmospheric science, oceanography)
• 1-2 years of experience working in a communications role at a research organization, public or private sector agency, or environmental non-governmental organization
• Knowledge of climate science, climate impacts science, issues, and concerns relevant to climate resilience in the Northwest.
• Experience with Marketo email marketing
• Experience supporting the implementation of successful, organization-level communication strategies and branding campaigns
• Experience in designing and maintaining social media presence for an organization
• Experience and interest in working with scientists and in an academic setting
